I have always had a passion for, and worked in, the countryside and made a point of promoting my interest to people of all age groups, to help them understand the ways of the countryside better. I have worked hard to promote the environment both professionally and as a hobby, and one of the best ways to do this is to actually get out there and explore at a pace that give you the ability to take in your surroundings.
I have personally been walking long distances for many years. I think nothing of walking for 12 - 14 miles in a day and again the next day, and this activity is how the idea, and the name, of walkalongway.com started to develop. Over the years I have walked the South Downs Way (100 miles), with my brother when we were teenagers, walked the North Downs Way (150 miles) and Cotswold Way (100 miles)and Pembrokeshire Coast Path - numerous times... I have been a scout leader taking groups to the Lake District, Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and other places.
But probebly more important I take in my surroundings as I walk, try to learn some history of a particular feature, make a point of speaking to people I meet along the way - they are a bucketful of information. This approach has given me an excellent insight into the county of Pembrokeshire, and being able to pass on this information is one reason why I am able to encourage people out into the parts of the county people very often miss.
